The Bloomington PrairieThunder hockey team started as a vision six years ago by team owner John Butler and Central Illinois Arena Management General Manager Mike Nelson. In 2000 the pair made contact with the United Hockey League to express interest in forming a new team. Six years later, on September 20, 2005, the UHL Board of Governors announced it had awarded a member club to be owned and operated by BMI Hockey, LLC and play in Bloomington's (than-unopened) U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
In February of 2006 the Coliseum staff announced a contest for the community to name the hockey team which would call Bloomington its home. The staff received the winning entry from Mike Matejka, and on February 23 CIAM announced the PrairieThunder would soon rumble through the Twin Cities.
The PrairieThunder's home venue opened in April of 2006 and season ticket sales for the team's inaugural season were announced a month later. In early June the first draft acquisitions for the PrairieThunder were made, and a team began to form.
In a press conference on June 28 the team announced Derek Booth its Head Coach, and Booth announced Trevor Baker would be his player/assistant coach for the season. The PrairieThunder released its finalized 2006-07 schedule on July 5, 2006, and unveiled its new logos 15 days later.
Team and staff were announced and added in the days to follow. With the Home opener on Oct 14TH. This night was the largest crowd to history. This article is complements ofwww.prairiethunderhockey.com/team/history/
